Be Kind…online. April 23, 2015

galit I am currently reading the book “Kindness Wins” by Galit Breen. Like her, I am a huge social media fan. I think I have passed that on to my daughters – 14 and 11. This book could not have come along at a better time. It brings up a whole new way to parent. That is parenting about technology, the internet and all the good it can be, but all the heartache and hurt that can ultimately come with it.

I grew up in a time where the phone was connected to the wall. Getting a push button vs. dial phone was the next best thing. Where if you were lucky enough, you could stretch that cord into the next room and maybe shut the door for privacy. Can you imagine the utter shock and aw we had when the cordless phone entered our home? It was so large and the antenna you had to manually pull out could double as a stick to poke your sibling with. The all important antenna you had to use to get the best reception.

Today, our children have smart phones, tablets that all have accounts with Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram and a whole slew of things I am not familiar with, but try to keep up with. A society that if you aren’t tagged or mentioned in a Instagram photo, your feelings get hurt. This book written by my friend addresses all those “new things” we have as parents to be concerned about. I am a mother who checks her children’s phones, look at their photos and what they are posting. I am constantly reminding them that the 100 selfie photos they take in a day will be in the “interwebs” of the world FOREVER. This book gave me a whole new way to look at their accounts and all the conversations to have with them about it. How an occasional non-mention in a photo or post is the new way to bully – a new way that we or children may not even be aware of.

It is such a new world to raise children in – especially the tween/teen years with technology. This book will help any parent or teen see things in a whole new light. It will spark conversations to have and teaches your child (and parents as well) to think before you post. This world is all about NOW and the immediacy of posting things. We need to go back to a simpler time where we stopped and had to think about things before you ranted or raved to a person…in person, not hiding behind the social media of it.

I encourage you all to read this book. You will NOT be disappointed and you will want to hug Galit and thank her for teaching you how to parent in a technology filled world.
