Slow Down…

So here we are…a new year. While I get caught up in all the New Year’s resolutions like everyone else: lose weight, exercise more, be organized etc etc blah blah blah. This year I made a resolution for the winter months – to SLOW DOWN.  I was becoming the mom that was constantly saying “Hurry up – we need to leave NOW”…”Hurry up and eat, we have to go in 5 minutes”….”Hurry up and get to bed, it’s late” .  I was exhausted, crabby and not loving life with my family because we had too many things going on. When compared to other families wasn’t that much, but it was too much for THIS family. I decided to not be signed up for any extra activities for the “winter quarter”.  So now our calendar actually has days on it that with NOTHING written in.

Monday: piano 1/2 hour lesson Olivia.     Tuesday: NOTHING.

Wednesday: Maddie church school 7-8pm

Thursday: NOTHING.    Friday: NOTHNG.    Saturday: NOTHING

Sunday: church and dance (dance is for church).

It needed to be done and was more than welcomed. We were spending too much time rushing all over for activities and we were all crabby because of the hustle and bustle. I honestly do NOT know how families do it with sports every night. We needed to take back our lives. Slow down. Have family dinners more than once or twice a week. Enjoy the journey of life without rushing through it and wondering where need to be next.  I was barking at my kids all the time to hurry. Hurry and eat dinner so I can clean up and we can get to where we need to be….now we enjoy dinner, taste it and don’t rely on fast food. We sit and savor the moment. One thing we added twice a week to that was a family meeting over dessert…everyone gets a turn to talk and discuss. We CONNECT with each other instead of rushing thru a conversation with a normal “yep” and “uh huh”. Bedtime used to be a hurried nonsense of a mess. Prayers were to recite the Our Father- quick and be done so I can relax and have ME time. Now that every thing has slowed down, we can listen to the girls heartfelt prayers that THEY come up with – not a memorized routine. Hugs and Kisses and going to bed happy…not crabby and rushed.  Sure, they need swim lessons, want to take gymnastics and have moments of  “I’m bored”…well next quarter we will add in those…but for now we are going to stop and enjoy the moments that get away from us too fast. Schedule things we WANT to do vs. stuff we are scheduled to do week to week. As a family we need to take this time to slow down and just be a family vs. a well oiled machine that is always running and running. We are spending more weekends in our jammies longer…actually answering the question of “what are we doing today?” with the answer of “NOTHING!” and it feels good!
